My favorite books: I read pretty much everything because I love the printed word. My favorite books are those that inform or develop my mind. Yes...I am a bit of geek when it comes to knowledge but then that is why I have a University education and the compulsion to keep on learning. My most favorite of favorite literature...of course...are my own books. My novels really do entertain me. I am surprised when I re-read something I wrote that I haven't looked at in a long time. I can't believe that I wrote such a good story.
My favorite quote:
"To be or not to be! That is the question my dear Yorrick!"
I have been writing all my life. I started out writing poetry, one act murder mystery plays, science fiction and fantasy, fairy tales, and romance when I grew older, a lot of non-fiction in my twenties, then serious writing when I overcame writer's block in my thirties. I have stretched my talents to include many genres just for the practice to develop many writing styles. I always love a challenge when it comes to the use of my imagination.
Hallo Marion Is your Group: HOW TO WRITE BETTER up and running ? I am interested in this as a debating point because I am one of those awkward writers who tells a story in his own way and doesn't want his work to be messed about with. You see - I believe there are basically two kinds of writers (maybe more) the first of whom wished to tell a story straight from the heart - just as if you heard it sitting round the dinner table. Then there are those who are very fussy about the correctness of every word, sentence, and paragraph - they want perfectness. I have submitted my work to a professional editor when I first started writing. He asked me to send him two chapters - which I did. What came back was a travesty. It was not me anymore - it was him ! What he left was just a skeleton of the story as it should be told. He was very triumphant telling me how many words he had managed to delete - what he didn't realise was that what was left was not, to me, an interestying story at all. Much shorter - yes. Grammatically better - yes. But a better story ? - No ! I have never understood this mania for abbreviation and deletion. I like the views of the editor of my book A BOY FROM NOWHERE who, when he read the manuscript, said: DAVID HAS HIS OWN UNIQUE STYLE OF WRITING. HE SEEMS TO WRITE AS HE TALKS. SO, IN ORDER NOT TO DISTURB OR DELETE HIS PERSONALITY WITHIN THE NARRATIVE I PROPOSE TO AMEND ANY SPELLING ERRORS OR ANY GRAMMATICAL ERRORS BUT LEAVE THE BODY OF THE MANUSCRIPT WITH MINIMUM ADJUSTMENT. I should mention that the vast majority of my writings are true accounts of my long and adventurous life which began way back in the 1920s - and I tell my stories as they happened to me and in my way. Any opinions on this ? David Mitchell
Hi Marion: I've seen no response from anyone regarding the subject of 'Historical Fiction' in a discussion group. I would like to submit 'Sands of Time' to this group. It is a lengthy novel and few have taken the time to read it, but those that did were pleasantly surprised at the story and the writing. I would recommend anyone to check out those who have read and commented on it. Some of the characters in the novel are quite complex and could generate interesting perspectives from those with a decent literary background. It's a damn good book and deserves discerning eyes.
I'm getting some fine reviews from readers of my book, 'Sands of Time' It's length might discourage many, but anyone seeking to read a good well written story should give it a try. They will not be disappointed.
Thanks for the invitation to be friends. I gladly accept! And I really enjoy your writing; it's so much more real life to me than others here on Bookrix...
