BoW Stories in Both Contests
Due to the reason the story, “Fleeing Callignee,” is running in both the Battle of Words VI and the Family Stories contest, the story will not be eligible to win this Battle of Words. Please note that votes will not be tallied for this story in the BoW.
However, it still will add to the page count donation to the American Red Cross effort in Haiti.

Natural Disaster - My votes.
1st place: Story 2. "Underground" by Timmi Milson. Although I thought the over use of 4-letter words devalued some of the characters (crudeness can be illustrated more creatively), the pace of this story and astute observations made it my favourite.
2nd place: Story 4. "Chen An Yo Pale!" by Paula Shene. I loved the naturalness of this story.
3rd place: Story 15. "Chaos!" by CactusRose. This would have come higher in my voting but I felt there were too many characters for such a short story. The author was trying to be true to historical events but this resulted in a lot of repetition.

Voting the Haitian Contest
has been extremely hard for me - I read all the entries and they all have merit in my opinion so to narrow the field in my picking, I eliminated past winners though I was moved deeply by their poems. I also eliminated everything that did not have to do with an earthquake. I will only name the top three. I also did not put my own story in the line up even though I would like to:
1. Underground by Timmi Milson - I also agree that the 'f' words were jarring but felt they fit the characterization of the storyline which really reflects our headlines.
2. Natural Disaster: Candles for Haiti by Shobana - This set of poems seemed to cover every aspect from despair to Hope. 'Mom, sing me a song' made me weep.
3. Friends Forever by Aditi Das Bhowmik was a charming, well written narrative with smooth transition to dialogue with a few grammatical mistakes as English is not first language. This did not take away from the story which started with a parable and ended with...
Yesterday is already a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision. But today, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of Hope.
