Edgar Allan Poe remembered!

In just a few days it will be the anniversary of Edgar Allan Poe's birthday, as he was born on January 19, in 1809!

Poe was not only an American writer, poet, editor and literary critic, he was considered to be part of the American Romantic Movement, and is best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre. Poe was one of the very early American practitioners of the short story and is considered to be the inventor of the detective-fiction genre! He is also further credited with contributing to the emerging genre of science fiction. Wow!

To honor Edgar Allan Poe, literary legend and master of the macabre, I'm taking a look back at his renowned works that were later (much later) adapted into film and/or TV. I thought it might be a nice remembrance to start a dialog about where we've seen his influence in main stream media, and our thoughts and opinions on his classic works.

One of the more notable films where Poe's written words were the initial source for inspiration was the 1960's movie The Raven, produced and directed by Roger Corman, written by Richard Matheson based on references from Poe's poetic masterpiece.

Can you think of other places The Raven has been seen or used, or other works by Poe that have appeared in modern-day, mainstream or media references? What other Edgar Allan Poe pieces do you like?

Never read The Raven???
Here's your chance! It's here on BookRix:

Thanks!

Thanks for the comments! Yes, I am inspired by Poe, as he really overcame odds to succeed in life! I recently wrote about him in the BookRix Blog, http://blog.bookrix.com/2011/01/10/edgar-allan-poe-remembered/

We also happen to share the same birthday, January 19th, so I felt connected and inspired to honor him. He wrote in new directions and with new elements in his day, which takes creativity, courage and passion - all attributes that I would love to connect with as a writer!

Have either of you seen the Simpson's Halloween episodes where "The Raven" is referenced? I'm wondering if Poe thought his poetry would leave such lasting impact on such a different world from the world he knew. Interesting to ponder!

Story idea through daydreaming?

I just saw this Poe line from his story, "Eleonora":

"They who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those who dream only by night."

Have you ever gotten a story idea through daydreaming? I wonder if Poe did.

Meet the Ravens: Edgar, Allan & Poe!

Fun fact I just found!!! I just love this pop culture reference of Edgar Allan Poe and "The Raven" and I couldn't help but add it in a comment.

Did you know that the Baltimore Ravens NFL Team named their three mascot ravens Edgar, Allan and Poe? How fun is that!?!?!
