Cost and Registration
What does it cost to use BookRix?
Using BookRix is absolutely free of charge.
How will I find out if BookRix will charge for its services?
We are obligated to inform users of these kinds of changes. However, we are not planning to introduce charges for services.
Do I have to register?
If you want to upload your book, vote on contest books or interact in the community, you will need to register. But you don't need to register to read the books.
There are ads on BookRix. Will there also be advertisement in my books?
BookRix does not have the right to change the content of your books. We will not publish advertisement in your books.
What about targeted advertisements?
Data such as age and gender in your registration information are used to adapt the advertisements on your site. That means that a young girl will probably see a banner for lipstick and a young man will more likely see an advertisement for a shaver.
How many ads will I receive after registering on BookRix?
There are two places where you will see ads: banners on BookRix pages (e.g. Google ads) and ads in the newsletter (if you have chosen to receive it). We do not send you spam or give your email address to advertising companies or any other third party.
Does BookRix earn money directly from the posted book?
BookRix does not make money directly from your work. However, the website mostly finances itself from advertising. You’ve probably already seen the banners.
Copyright
By publishing with BookRix, do I transfer my copyright to BookRix?
Definitely not. You always keep your complete copyright.
Does BookRix have the exclusive publishing rights of the books?
BookRix does not and will never own the exclusive rights to your content. By publishing your book on BookRix.com, you only give us the right to show your work on our website (for instance, in the Books section). This is valid as long as your content stays on our platform.
If you delete your content, we no longer have the right to display your work. However, you may not upload your book using the BookRix format to other websites since BookRix owns the proprietary rights to the book format technology.
May I re-publish my manuscript that I previously displayed on BookRix on other sites?
Yes. Since the rights of your content belong to you, you can decide where you would like to publish them (on your homepage, online boards, etc.).
I've already placed my work in many online boards. May I also post them on BookRix?
Yes. As long as you comply with the Code of Conduct, you can publish any manuscript to which you hold the copyright.
Am I allowed to post books on BookRix that I have already published with a publishing house and are available in stores or online retailers?
Yes! However, you should label the book clearly as a sample. Otherwise, readers may expect a complete book and may judge your work badly. Check with your publishing house to see if you are allowed to publish your content on BookRix as your publishing house may hold the copyright and not you.
May I refer to my homepage to direct readers to buy my books?
In your profile, you can refer readers to your own homepage. Naturally, you can embed your book sample that you posted on BookRix on to your homepage.
Can I create samples for my author homepage on BookRix?
You can use BookRix as a marketing tool for your homepage free of charge. To embed an image with a link to your BookRix profile and books, go to the Home tab, click on the Promote Your Books link, and then copy the HTML code under the Web Promotion button. Paste the code into the appropriate place on your website and the image will appear on your site.
Can I upload a smaller part of my book as a sample?
Yes, you can divide your longer story and publish it in several steps. Or simply publish only a smaller portion of your book as a sample for readers. You might even develop a dedicated fan club by releasing your story or stories in segments on BookRix.
What about fanfiction?
Fanfiction normally uses content of existing works (films, books, etc.). However, often this happens without the permission of the authors or the rights’ holders. Even if fanfiction authors accurately represent the copyright holders in their books, this does not qualify as legal approval from the copyright holder allowing use of his or her work for fanfiction literature. Therefore, a large part of fanfiction works are legally inadmissible. So the fanfiction category can be seen as an invitation to violate copyright and we want to avoid such complications.
There also is legal fanfiction. Fanfiction books based on books or films whose authors allow the use of the content. These books may be posted on BookRix, according to our General Terms and Conditions. In this case, you have to select the appropriate category (e.g. science fiction or fantasy) in the Subcategory field. You can introduce any other category you want to.
Protection of Minors
How do you protect minors?
We ask you to not upload content to your profile that may not be suitable for minors since your profile is available to all visitors (even if they’re not registered). Regarding your book content, if you think that the content of your book is not suitable for minors, then you should indicate that with the red X-Rated symbol on the book editing page. When you select this option, a red X-rated label will appear on the cover, indicating the text may not be suitable for readers under the age of 18.
You also can give an age recommendation on the introduction page of your book in accordance with what is reasonable with child and youth literature.

Technical Issues
I am logged out again and again!
This is probably an issue with cookies on your Web browser. You can find detailed instructions about the problem here in the Support Forum.
How can I cancel the newsletter?
In the Home tab, you can change your preferences in the Personal Settings section. Go to the bottom and uncheck the checkbox next to “Yes, send me the BookRix newsletter.”
I have posted my book, but it does not appear on the site under new books.
There are two possibilities: you marked your book as a sample or your book is still in editing mode. Published samples do not appear under new books. In the other case, you have to publish it by clicking on the Publish button.
Can I still change a BookRix book after it is published?
You can change it in the Edit Books section at any time. However, it will not get a new publication date nor will it appear again as a new post in the library list.
Privacy
If I register on BookRix, I must agree to the use of my personal data. Will it be transferred to a third party?
We don't transfer your personal data to a third party. In the rare legal case when there is a legal procedure regarding your manuscripts, we will be obligated to release personal information to the legal authorities.
Updating Your Information
How do I change my profile picture?
Go to the Home tab and click on Personal Settings. Scroll down until you see your current picture. Below it you can browse on your computer for a picture.
I see other people have cool backgrounds. How can I do that too?
Go to the Home tab and click on Edit My Profile. There you can choose a background color, text color, link color, view counter, picture background and your design template.
How do I change my password or e-mail address?
Go to the Home tab and click on Personal Settings. At the top, you will see the fields to change your password or e-mail address.
I don’t see where I can add information about me!
Go to the Home tab and click on Personal Settings. Scroll down until you see the About Me, Favorite Literature, Favorite Quote, My Last Book, My Website, Occupation and My Hobbies sections.
Where can I add a quote that will show up every time I post a message?
Go to the Home tab and click on Personal Settings. Scroll down until you see Favorite Quote. When you post a message on the thread, you will need to click the checkbox next to “Yes, my favorite quote should be shown below the thread.”
What do the “design templates” mean on the Profile Edit tab?
Design templates are the background that can be seen. Check out the ones we offer by clicking through the drop-down menu or upload your own photo as a background on the Profile Edit tab.
How do I add friends on BookRix?
If you see someone on BookRix you would like to be friends with, go to his or her profile page and look to the upper right. There you will see the Add as a Friend button. Click on that and it will bring up a window where you can add an optional message into the friend request. Click Send and wait for him or her to accept your friend request.
How do I send a message to my BookRix friends?
To send a message to your BookRix friends, go to your Inbox (the tab at the top of the page) and click “Compose a new message” on the left. You can either send a message to all your friends by clicking Select All or to just a few by selecting the checkbox next to their name.
How can I block someone on BookRix?
Go to the Home tab and at the top of your profile, you will see the Block Users button. Click that and add the username(s) who you want to block. Click Update Your Blacklist at the bottom.
Book Uploads and Covers
How do I upload my book?
1) Go to the Home tab.
2) Click on My Books.
3) Click on Create a New Book.
4) Click on the Book Upload button, which will bring up the Process section.
5) Select the right mode from that list.
6) You will be asked to fill out the form about your book. If you are doing the file upload, then you will need to browse your computer to find the book.
7) If you upload the book without the cover or want to change the cover, you can change it later (see below).
8) If you do not want to make the book public, you can leave the visibility setting to Me Only. If you want others to read it or to enter it into a contest, you will need to allow Everyone to see it.
9) Once you have finished filling out the information, click the Save button at the bottom of the page.
The cover image did not upload when I uploaded the book or I want to change the cover. How do I do that?
1) Go to the Home tab.
2) Click on My Books.
3) Click Edit Book.
4) Select the book you want to add the cover to from the drop-down menu that shows up.
5) You now will see the edit page. In the second box, make sure Normal Book Edit Mode is checked. Then, scroll down to the Cover section.
6) You can upload your cover image now by using the search box and finding the cover image on your computer. If your cover is part of a Word document, make sure to save it as an image file (JPEG) on its own.
7) Once you have selected the correct cover image, make sure to click the Save Cover button at the bottom right of the Cover section.
8) Then, click Save Book at the bottom of the Edit page.
It might take a minute to change and remember to hit the Refresh button on your browser.
Groups, Forums and Threads
How do I join groups?
To join groups, click on the Community tab and then go to Groups. There you will find a listing of all the groups. Click on any group that interests you and click on the Join button on the right side. You will then be notified of new group discussions and news.
How do I start a group?
If you don’t find a group that suits what you’re looking for, feel free to start a new one. Click on the Community tab and then go to Groups. On the right-hand side, you will see a box where you can create a group.
How do I start a thread on the forum?
At the top of the page, click Forum and you will see the General Forum, Battle of the Words Forum, Support Forum and News Forum. To start a thread on any of these, look at their headers and you will find the New Topic button. Click there to start a new thread. You will be notified when a reply has been made in the thread.
How do I reply to a thread on a forum?
To reply to an existing thread, look to the blue header of the thread. On the right-hand side, you will see an Answer button. Click and write your response. You will be notified when a reply has been made in the thread.
How do I compete in contests or Battle of Words?
To compete in contests, you first need to upload the book and set the visibility setting to Everyone. Then, go to the Contests tab and choose the contest you want to enter. This will take you into the contest information page and at the bottom, click on the Join as an Author button. You will be asked which book you would like to submit and then a window with the Terms and Conditions will pop up. Once you have read these, please click on the Accept the Terms button at the bottom and your book has been successfully submitted!
To compete in the Battle of Words (BoW) contest, go either to the Contests tab or the Forum tab and click on Battle of Words thread. During the first week of the contest, contestants are invited to register on the registration thread. All you have to do is reply in the thread that you want to join the BoW. In the second week, you will link to your book in the story thread. In the third week, everybody can vote in the voting thread by commenting with the names of their personal favorite books (first, second and third place choices). The votes are counted once that week is up and the three best-rated books (determined on the amount of votes cast per book) will be given to an independent jury. The winners will be announced on the voting thread.
