The Jury’s Comments
Let us introduce our jury panel:
Harry Sims Harry Sims is a seasoned veteran in the world of books. He has taught writing to literally thousands of students for over three decades, owned and operated a successful bookstore, written dozens of book reviews and assorted journal articles, and worked as an editor for a major West Coast literary agency. Throughout this time, he has also worked as a freelance book editor, assisting with a variety of projects from preliminary outlines to final edits for a wide range of books including several bestselling novels. Currently, he is an editorial agent with All Stages Marketing, based in Santa Barbara, California.
Danika Migliore Danika Migliore is a recent graduate of Purdue University with a major in Communications and a minor in Sociology and Religion. Danika is from Connecticut, but currently is located in Lafayette where she lives with her Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
What the Jury had to say*:
Jury Comments on The Push and Pull of You by evercaptivating:
“The desperation and pain of love is captured so well in this poem. The onomatopoeia in this poem is harsh and describes love breaking an individual down to the absolute raw bone of their existence. It also helped capture the confusion and the inability to think clearly when love is blinding you. It is a great poem that allows the reader to be apart of a relationship that is a struggle and has caused the narrator so much pain in the past.” – Danika Migliore
“The voice in this poem is raw, and the poetic structure is refreshingly unrefined. When the reader gets to the phrase “You refused to fight for me,” it becomes clear that this poem is more of a howl than a lament.” – Harry Sims
Jury Comments on The Common Man and Neptune’s Daughter by sereni:
“This poem creates the mythological element in a poem about forbidden love. The use of the lyrical warnings helps sustain the mythical nature of the poem and also allows the tragedy of the poem to unfold. There is great use of onomatopoeia throughout the poem that helps the reader actually hear the ocean and the warnings that are surrounding it. This poem is one that a reader can read over and over again capturing something new each time.” – Danika Migliore
“I appreciate the good diction demonstrated in the italicized refrains. Words like alabaster, opulent, nymph, and plaintive contribute to the poem’s timeless atmosphere… The rhyme scheme is very consistent but not annoyingly so. It is a relatively sophisticated pattern which works well for the meaning and tone of the poem.” – Harry Sims
*The jury provided comments for all of the top five in this contest (as well as extended comments to the contest winners). The comments will be sent via private BookRix messages to the finalists.
Thank you to all our wonderful independent judges!
Congrats again to all winners! The BookRix Team
