Pretty much all the great authors throughout history have been rejected. Check out the list at the bottom of the article. Some of those books were required reading when I was in high school. Stephen King's Carrie was rejected by over 30 publishers. Seems like I read somewhere that he kept those rejection letters pinned on the wall of his office... Show more

Bout right. I just didn't want to George Lucas everything, and noodle my work to death. But AVD needed one more go round of tweaking. Swear this is it!
And yeah, I prob will pub myself. I'll send out 10 more queries, then call it.

Let me know whenever you get a bad critique, and... Show more

Thanks, I definitely need encouragement after a bad critique. And I won't know who won the contests until August. Until then I just keep finding more writing contests to enter :)

jeffschanz

I can't imagine your critiques would be that bad. In my opinion, your writing is solid, your dialogue has natural flow, and you draw your reader through your book very well. In short, you have excellent talent, and I think you're a pro.

Lately, as I have been somewhat flighty in my concentration on my stories, I've been trying writing challenges. I entered a contest where they gave you the first and last paragraph and you had to fill in the middle of the story with 48 paragraphs of your own and it had to be entirely narrative, no dialogue. I also entered a writing challenge where you had to write a short story in exactly 1800 words, no more, no less. They... Show more

I'm sorry, I forget about normal niceties of society sometimes. Hi, how are you?

jeffschanz

Ha! Hey Calliope. I'll say I'm fine.

Me personally, I'm not into writing contests. I really don't think they are a waste or destructive, but I'm done with them anyway. I'm 50, and did my share of critiques and writing classes back when I was in college. Plus I'm a visual artist,... Show more

Hi, I know its kind of random for me to ask you questions but I'm curious and you're actually on here sometimes and of the authors I've read on here, you're in the top ten as far as skill and creativity and the things that keep me interested in a book, so I thought I'd ask, I hope you don't mind. Your book ( which I'm reading but haven't finished so don't quiz me, I'll fail) is pretty long. That's not a criticism, just a... Show more

Hi Calliope! First of all, I'm flattered you asked the question, and for reading my book. It's been a while since I had the whole thing available. Did you get a copy before it became a sample? I hope so. If not, and it ends like after chapter 5, or something, let me know and... Show more

Meeting delayed....

1. I'm a weirdo, and apparently don't have the same problem other people have of struggling to write a lot of words. I usually write too many words. Case in point my 148k novel you're reading. My next efforts I promise will be shorter. I have to limit my word... Show more

I wish I had the problem of writing too much. A lot of successful authors do (like Stephen King, Stephenie Meyer, J.J.R. Tolkien). My problem isn't so much motivation as it is attention span. I get distracted. Like, I was working on a project that I've been working on for years... Show more

**Warning! Long ass message follows**

I'm actually really happy you wanted to talk about writing! Its why I came here: share, discuss, vent about books. Met some awesome people, but the majority seem to be more interested in other things, so I haven't been around as much anymore.... Show more

Lessons in humility. Everyone says that even when you've edited as perfectly as you think is possible, go back and edit again. Pfffft! Yeah, well I'm good. ....Guess what? Nope, I'm not. Found so many embarrassing errors in my book that I was too confident weren't there.
That said, lesson learned. And for those currently reading my book, try to ignore the goofs. I will be editing it again.

Editing sucks!! Make it stop!!!

jeffschanz

OK. Not done editing... BUT this current version is an improvement at least. Hopefully, all that's left is small potatoes. In the meantime, this newest version is less embarrassing. Enjoy!

Hi all!
I'm fairly new here, and I'm just looking to exchange support, or vent, offer advice, reviews, and the occasional idle mind wandering. If you like to pad your friend list with random old dudes, or actually are interested in reading my work or promoting yours, then by all means "friend" me. The more the merrier. :)
