Having more abundant energy stores carries over into nearly every area in our lives. This means being more productive at work without having to get strung out on four cups of coffee ever morning, to being able to get back into that old sport you love, to being able to play with the kids without needing to take a nap on the couch. Believe me, the important people in your life will appreciate the difference nearly as much as you do! You Will Beat Depression. Now you may not be suffering from feeling down often, but the hard truth is that many out of shape people do. Getting fit is the best cure for melancholy! A fictional story can sometimes become reality, that’s the great thing about history.
The year is 2009 and America is mired in a terrible recession. Looking for a way out of an increasingly worsening economy, an unethical think-tank called the Studebaker Institute of Washington, D.C. is advising the newly-elected President of the United States about the urgent need for the country to return to a gold standard as the only way out. However, the stumbling block is where to find all the gold required to do so and estimated by Studebaker to be 900,000 metric tons. In the history of mankind only 130,000 metric tons of gold have ever been mined on Earth.
After various meetings with the U.S. Geological Survey, Dr. R. Cinza Brown the chief economist of the Institute is convinced by the Survey’s eccentric Dr. Benjamin “Pig” Lemkau that despite certain obstacles, the quickest solution is to harvest vast amounts of gold on Mars, heretofore a well kept state secret, using high-yield thermonuclear ordnance. But Archie Jefferson, a photocopier repairman at Studebaker, has accidentally discovered this government top secret project called Operation GERDA - Gold Extraction & Relocation for Defense of America - and involved his army buddy and fellow Vietnam War veteran Sam Noble through a careless act.
Samuel Lee Noble is a Senior Courier with the U.S. State Department soon approaching mandatory retirement age and has always wanted to write a book, based on his many worldwide travels, but has picked the wrong time and place. He sends over to Archie at Studebaker using inter-agency mail some of his first chapters, which are then intercepted by Studebaker’s security staff, setting off a chain of events which threatens the lives of Sam, Archie, and others in their wider circle.
Now the FBI is secretly investigating the whole affair because Sam, after a lifetime of procrastination, is finally writing about his favorite subjects like Atlantis, the Holy Grail hoax, Knights Templar, mysteries of the ancient world, the Antarctic, and by strange coincidence has also picked gold to write about. The protagonist in Sam’s book is called Duke Mitchum, a name he simply invented by combining the names of this two all-time favorite actors, John “Duke” Wayne and Robert Mitchum. Sam loves old movies and television shows, especially Westerns.
Sam and Archie are suspected by Studebaker and the FBI of being dangerous spies and possibly belonging to a domestic terrorist cell with Duke being the clandestine ringleader of the cell. Sam, though, has the last laugh at the end when he retires with his mystical Brazilian wife, part Nambikuára Indian from the Amazon rainforest, to her native village called Campo Dourado where they both make an amazing discovery of their own not far from where Theodore Roosevelt once explored the legendary River of Doubt in 1914. “Why is Switzerland in my kitchen?”
A tabletop, role-playing game called MystikQuest is a fun diversion from the disappointing lives of Wes Walker and his socially awkward, junior high friends, Marc and AJ. It doesn’t matter to Wes that his friends think his game is a lame rip-off of “Lord of the Rings.” Playing fantasy fiction is harmless fun until one fateful day when Wes discovers a dying creature in his treehouse, clutching an old arrowhead relic Wes dug up from his back yard. The creature looks remarkably like a goblin. Fiction soon becomes reality.
What Wes thought was an old arrowhead turns out to be an ancient magic artifact that defends itself by spinning elaborate, seemingly realistic illusions. One moment, they’re all in AJ’s basement, entertaining other reluctant teens banished from the adult party upstairs, the next moment, a sunny, Swiss mountainscape appears where AJ’s kitchen should be. It’s only an illusion, but it looks, sounds, smells, and feels real.
The level of inexplicability rises when Wes’s mysterious, long-lost Uncle Dru suddenly shows up claiming to be a real-life wizard assigned to protect the stone from a rogue member of his order. On cue, a black-clad wizard with red eyes bursts in, initiating a wand duel that trap the six bewildered teens in the crossfire. Stray wand blasts trigger the stone’s defense mechanism and the kids are magically transported into the fictional world of Wes’s MystikQuest game.
Chosen for them by the stone, the kids are thrust into ironic game avatars: Meek and scrawny Marc is a charismatic, muscular warrior; quiet, autistic Schroeder is a transcendent druid; brainy, logical Wes is a mystical wizard; tall, stylish high-schooler Tyler is a diminutive hobbit; introverted emo Katie is a scantily-clad, voluptuous elf warrioress; and foul-mouthed, obnoxious AJ is the equally foul-mouthed and obnoxious half-ogre. Adjusting to their new superhuman bodies and abilities, they must navigate the game to somehow conclude its story for the stone to release them. But how can a bunch of nerdy, awkward teens who rarely exercise or go outside, much less know how to fight maniacal orcs and fire-spewing dragons, be expected to defeat an entire evil kingdom as daunting as (and ripped off from) Tolkein’s Mordor? And how can they stop the red-eyed wizard from sabotaging the game and hunting them like prey?
With help from two of the game characters, a kindly, garrulous old wizard and an Aragorn-like heir in exile, the kids will battle giant spiders, drunken brutes, moronic orcs, plagiarized plots, and their own insecurities to somehow beat the game before they’re stuck in the stone’s illusion forever.

I was born a slave; but I never knew it till six years of happy childhood had passed away. My father was a carpenter, and considered so intelligent and skilful in his trade, that, when buildings out of the common line were to be erected, he was sent for from long distances, to be head workman. On condition of paying his mistress two hundred dollars a year, and supporting himself, he was allowed to work at his trade, and manage his own affairs. His strongest wish was to purchase his children; but, though he several times offered his hard earnings for that purpose, he never succeeded. In complexion my parents were a light shade of brownish yellow, and were termed mulattoes. They lived together in a comfortable home; and, though we were all slaves, I was so fondly shielded that I never dreamed I was a piece of merchandise, trusted to them for safe keeping, and liable to be demanded of them at any moment. I had one brother, William, who was two years younger than myself—a bright, affectionate child.
Such were the unusually fortunate circumstances of my early childhood. When I was six years old, my mother died; and then, for the first time, I learned, by the talk around me, that I was a slave. My mother's mistress was the daughter of my grandmother's mistress. She was the foster sister of my mother; they were both nourished at my grandmother's breast. In fact, my mother had been weaned at three months old, that the babe of the mistress might obtain sufficient food. They played together as children; and, when they became women, my mother was a most faithful servant to her whiter foster sister. On her death-bed her mistress promised that her children should never suffer for any thing; and during her lifetime she kept her word. They all spoke kindly of my dead mother, who had been a slave merely in name, but in nature was noble and womanly.
Reader, my story ends with freedom; not in the usual way, with marriage. I and my children are now free! We are as free from the power of slaveholders as are the white people of the north; and though that, according to my ideas, is not saying a great deal, it is a vast improvement in my condition. The dream of my life is not yet realized. I do not sit with my children in a home of my own, I still long for a hearthstone of my own, however humble. I wish it for my children's sake far more than for my own. But God so orders circumstances as to keep me with my friend Mrs. Bruce. Love, duty, gratitude, also bind me to her side. It is a privilege to serve her who pities my oppressed people, and who has bestowed the inestimable boon of freedom on me and my children.
It has been painful to me, in many ways, to recall the dreary years I passed in bondage. I would gladly forget them if I could. Yet the retrospection is not altogether without solace; for with those gloomy recollections come tender memories of my good old grandmother, like light, fleecy clouds floating over a dark and troubled sea. A Castle of Otranto is a novel by Horace Walpole. It is generally regarded as the first gothic novel, initiating a literary genre which would become extremely popular in the later 18th century and early 19th century. Thus, Walpole, by extension, is arguably the forerunner to such authors as Charles Maturin, Ann Radcliffe, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe and Daphne du Maurier.
The Castle of Otranto tells the story of Manfred, lord of the castle, and his family. The book begins on the wedding-day of his sickly son Conrad and princess Isabella. Shortly before the wedding, however, Conrad is crushed to death by a gigantic helmet that falls on him from above. This inexplicable event is particularly ominous in light of an ancient prophecy "That the castle and lordship of Otranto should pass from the present family, whenever the real owner should be grown too large to inhabit it". Manfred, terrified that Conrad's death signals the beginning of the end for his line, resolves to avert destruction by marrying Isabella himself while divorcing his current wife Hippolita, who he feels has failed to bear him a proper heir. However, as Manfred attempts to marry Isabella, she escapes to a church with the aid of a peasant named Theodore. Manfred orders Theodore's death while talking to the friar Jerome, who ensured Isabella's safety in the church. When Theodore removes his shirt to be killed, Jerome recognizes a marking below his shoulder and identifies Theodore as his own son. Jerome begs for his son's life, but Manfred says Jerome must either give up the princess or his son's life. They are interrupted by a trumpet and the entrance of knights from another kingdom who want to deliver Isabella. This leads the knights and Manfred to race to find Isabella. Theodore, having been locked in a tower by Manfred, is freed by Manfred's daughter Matilda. He races to the underground church and finds Isabella. He hides her in a cave and blocks it to protect her from Manfred and ends up fighting one of the mysterious knights. Theodore badly wounds the knight, who turns out to be Isabella's father, Frederic. With that, they all go up to the castle to work things out. Frederic falls in love with Matilda and he and Manfred begin to make a deal about marrying each other's daughters. Manfred, suspecting that Isabella is meeting Theodore in a tryst in the church, takes a knife into the church, where Matilda is meeting Theodore. Thinking his own daughter is Isabella, he stabs her. Theodore is then revealed to be the true prince of Otranto and Matilda dies, leaving Manfred to repent. Theodore becomes king and eventually marries Isabella because she is the only one who can understand his true sorrow. [more]

"Beyond the Black River" is one of the original short stories about Conan the Cimmerian, written by American author Robert E. Howard. A young settler named Balthus encounters Conan in the forests slaying a forest devil. Accompanying the young man back to the Fort, Conan finds the body of a merchant ensorcelled by a Pictish wizard named Zogar Sag and slain by a swamp demon.
The Fort Tuscelan Commander, Valannus, is a desperate man and asks Conan to slay Zogar Sag before he raises the Picts against the whole borderlands. Taking a hand picked team of scouts and Balthus, Conan sets off stealthily in canoes. Balthus is captured and most of Conan's men slaughtered in an ambush.
Balthus and one of the Scouts are tied to stakes and the scout is sacrificed by Zogar Sag to one of his jungle creatures. Before Balthus can meet a similar fate, Conan sets the Pictish village on fire and the two flee into the woods. Conan tells Balthus of the cult of Jhebbal Sag, now forgotten by most. Once all living things worshipped him when men and beasts spoke the same language. Over time men and most beasts forgot his worship. Zogar Sag has not, however, and can control those few animals and creatures who also remember. And they are on Conan's trail now.
Conan is able to neutralize them using a symbol he once noticed, and the pair hurry to return to the Fort to warn them of the impending Pictish assault, but they are too late.
They then go to warn the settlers that the Picts have crossed the river and are raiding. They are joined by Slasher, a feral dog formerly owned by a settler who had been slain by the Picts. Balthus is sent on to warn settlers of the coming Pict raid, and Conan parts from him to warn a group of settler who had gone to gather salt. Balthus warns the settlers, and—accompanied by Slasher—makes a stand against the coming Pict raiders. Their sacrifice delays the Picts and give the settlers time to reach safety. Conan manages to warn the salt-gathering party in time, but finds he has been marked for death by the gods of darkness for misusing the symbol of Jhebbal Sag. In the end Conan triumphs, but the fort is lost.
The story ends in a tavern. A survivor tells Conan about the courageous act of Balthus and Slasher, and how their final stand had delayed the Picts just barely long enough for the settlers to reach safety. Upon hearing of the fight, Conan vowed to take the heads of ten Picts to pay for Balthus' sacrifice, along with seven heads for the dog, who was "a better warrior than many a man." [more]

The Way of All Flesh is a semi-autobiographical novel by Samuel Butler that attacks Victorian-era hypocrisy. In 1998, the Modern Library ranked The Way of All Flesh twelfth on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.
The story is narrated by Overton, godfather to the central character. The novel takes its beginnings in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to trace Ernest's emergence from previous generations of the Pontifex family. John Pontifex was a carpenter; his son George rises in the world to become a publisher; George's son Theobald, pressed by his father to become a minister, is manipulated into marrying Christina, the daughter of a clergyman; the main character Ernest Pontifex is the eldest son of Theobald and Christina.
The author depicts an antagonistic relationship between Ernest and his hypocritical and domineering parents. His aunt Alethea is aware of this relationship, but dies before she can fulfill her aim of counteracting the parents' malign influence on the boy. However, shortly before her death she secretly passes a small fortune into Overton's keeping, with the agreement that once Ernest is twenty-eight, he can receive it.
As Ernest develops into a young man, he travels a bumpy theological road, reflecting the divisions and controversies in the Church of England in the Victorian era. Easily influenced by others at university, he starts out as an Evangelical Christian, and soon becomes a clergyman. He then falls for the lures of the High Church (and is duped out of much of his own money by a fellow clergyman). He decides that the way to regenerate the Church of England is to live among the poor, but the results are, first, that his faith in the integrity of the Bible is severely damaged by a conversation with one of the poor he was hoping to redeem, and, second, that under the pressures of poverty and theological doubt, he attempts a sexual assault on a woman he had incorrectly believed to be of loose morals. This assault leads to a prison term. His parents disown him. His health deteriorates.
As he recovers he learns how to tailor and decides to make this his profession once out of prison. He loses his Christian faith. He marries Ellen, a former housemaid of his parents, and they have two children and set up shop together in the second-hand clothing industry. However, in due course he discovers that Ellen is both a bigamist and an alcoholic. Overton at this point intervenes and pays Ellen a stipend, and she happily leaves with another for America. He gives Ernest a job, and takes him on a trip to Continental Europe. In due course Ernest becomes 28, and receives his aunt Alethea's gift. He returns to the family home until his parents die: his father's influence over him wanes as Theobald's own position as a clergyman is reduced in stature, though to the end Theobald finds small ways purposefully to annoy him. Tran-Maro-Haram (Der Kampf der Fünf) ist eine Sci-Fi-Story, bei der es explizite Beschreibungen, auch aus dem Bereich SM, gibt. Daher sollten es nur Erwachsene lesen.
Zador V. ist seit vielen Jahren Imperator des atalantischen Imperiums, einem Sternenreich mit einem Zusammenschluss aus sieben humanoiden Rassen. Jetzt geht es um seinen Nachfolger.
Bevor sein Enkel Martinosch als Nachfolger bestätigt werden kann, wird der von dem Rivalen Tremandur zum Tran-Maro-Haram, dem Kampf der Fünf, herausgefordert. Dabei geht es buchstäblich um Alles oder Nichts. Nicht nur die Nachfolge, auch der komplette Besitz der Kontrahenten ist der Einsatz.
Kampf der Fünf bedeutet, dass die Kontrahenten sich vier Helfer, Sklaven nach atalantischem Recht, von außerhalb des Imperiums holen müssen, um sich mit denen zusammen unbekannten Aufgaben zu stellen. Vier Sklaven, die jeder Kontrahent ohne vorherige Absprache einfach entführt. Es wird entschieden, diese Sklaven von der Erde zu holen.
Martinosch und Tremandur müssen ihre Sklaven auf sich einschwören und ausbilden, um die unbekannten Aufgaben zu erfüllen. Während Martinosch eher ein friedliches Miteinander anstrebt, ist Tremandur ein Hardliner und besteht auf seinem Willen.
Tremandur hat sein Team aus vier Football-Spielern zusammengestellt und er hat sich von seinem Besuch bei der Erde noch eine Sklavin als persönliches Andenken mitgenommen. Martinosch dagegen hat als Team eine Hotelbesitzerin mit einem Barkeeper, ihre Tochter und deren Freundin, die zusammen wohnen.
Wer motiviert und trainiert sein Team besser? Wer hat am Ende das bessere Team? Wer wird den Tran-Maro-Haram gewinnen? Wer wird neuer Imperator. Alles oder nichts.

Mit einem leichten Verziehen der Mundwinkel nahm sie zur Kenntnis, dass jetzt zwei Männer vor der Tür zum Zimmer an der Gangwandung lehnten. Anscheinend hatte Akira jemanden getroffen.
„Ist doch alles egal.“
Mit dieser müden Aussage ging Cloe an Jo und Akira vorbei in das Zimmer und legte sich auf ein Bett. Sie verschränkte die Arme hinter dem Kopf und starrte mit unbewegter Miene an die Decke. Zu erschüttert war ihr Weltbild durch ihre Schlussfolgerungen und sie versuchte sich dort neu zurechtzufinden. Jo und Akira staunten ihr hinterher.
Elvira erhob sich und setzte sich neben ihre Tochter.
„Was ist los, meine Kleine?“ fragte sie leise und legte ihr die Hand auf die Schulter.
„Wir kommen hier nicht weg“, sagte Cloe leise.
„Kein Ausgang?“ fragte Akira von der Tür her
„Keiner.“
Alle schwiegen. Das war eine harte Feststellung.
„Wir sind entführt worden“, erklärte Cloe leise weiter.
Alle nickten. So viel war ihnen auch schon klar geworden. Keiner war freiwillig oder bewusst hier.
„Von Aliens.“
Die Aussage ließ alle nach Luft schnappen. Jo und Akira sahen auf die beiden Fremden. Das waren doch Menschen, oder? Keine grünen Männchen oder diese Gesichter mit den riesigen Augen oder Tentakelwesen oder was man sonst so in Science-Fiction Filmen sah.
„Wir sind in einem Raumschiff unterwegs, weg von der Erde.“
Das war die zweite Hammeraussage. Sie erschütterte jeden erneut. Auch Akira ließ das Gerät in der Hand kraftlos sinken. Alle Blicke richteten sich auf Cloe. Welche Hiobsbotschaft kam noch?
Diesen Moment nutzte Hankador. Er war seit kurzem wieder wach und hatte unter halbgeschlossenen Lidern die Menschen beobachtet. Was da gerade gesprochen wurde, verstand er nicht, aber niemand sah zu ihm und die Betäubungswaffe war nicht mehr auf ihn gerichtet. Blitzschnell zuckte seine Rechte zu seinem Armbandgerät und sofort nach dem Kontakt zischte die Tür des Raums wieder zu. Die Menschen waren wieder gefangen. Zwar jetzt bewaffnet, aber er hatte die Zentralverriegelung aktiviert und damit alle Räume gesichert. [more]
