It sounds like a recording from his memory, something he has heard a thousand times before but doesn’t believe. I study his face in the moonlight searching for that memory. As if I can find an explanation, I let my eyes wander over every shadow and every angle, searching for something but finding nothing. Nothing apart from what seems to be his usual boredom and mental fatigue. He turns to look at me now, the moonlight and shadows trading places on his face, and my eyes meet his. They are a vibrant blue even with his black hair masking them in shadow. In contrast to the rest of his features, his eyes can’t keep anything from me. They tell me too much and all at once, things like sorrow, danger, fear, and love. I retrieve my gaze to see his shifted grin.
I watch her stare at me. I like the way she bites her bottom lip when she’s concentrating and I like the fact that she’s concentrating on me even more. She’s trying to figure me out – the obvious curiosity on her face proves as much. My heart begins to pound as I decide that I’ll let her.
“Did it help you find yourself?” She asks me.
“No,” I rub the back of my neck. “But that’s probably because there was nothing to find.”
I smile and laugh quietly to lighten the weight of my statement, but she doesn’t. She doesn’t act awkward by the personal connotations like most people would –wanting to back out of a situation before they fall in too deep and get stuck – Jasmine looks unsettled but determined.
