The warm rain seeped into the gashes that streaked his body in pairs of fives. His muscles tingled as if they had fallen asleep but, maybe they had, maybe that's what it felt like to die. To die in a dark alley, alone, in a puddle of his own blood. His thoughts were coils of venomous guilt and self pity as he watched the rain continue to fall. They fell from a black sky, leaving the very place he was heading for.
He closed his dark eyes in defeat, expecting to leave a life he thought wasn't worth fighting for anymore.
"Make me like you," Sam set his jaw, "I could help you."
Jayden rose slowly until he was looking down at the boy. Sam was strong for his age, and was well built. His long dark hair shaded his features, making him look older.
"Maybe," Jayden laughed without humor, "Tell me kid are you prepared to risk your life? Would you die for me?" He bent down and grabbed some clean clothes, among the myriad of supplies in the safe, and walked away.
Sam followed close, "Yes," he stayed at Jayden's side and grabbed his shoulder, stopping him, "Of course."
"Then you're stupid," Jayden shrugged Sam's hand off his shoulder, "I'm not worth dying over and I'm not about to let you die either. I started this alone and I'll end it alone, because I need to. You have no idea what my life is like and if I have anything to do with it you never will," Jayden threw his clothes onto the ground grabbed Sam by the front of his sweatshirt. He pushed him against the wall, hard enough to make him grunt. Sam's face was full of anger and defiance. "Do you understand?"
"You are such an ass!" Sam screamed, as he struggled against Jayden's grip, "I want to be a lyncan. It's my choice."
"Then become one," Jayden kept Sam's back on the wall, "Go ahead, make your choice."
Sam stared straight into Jayden's eyes with all the hate he could muster, before letting his legs give out. Jayden let him go and Sam sunk to the ground with the weight of his realization.
"Exactly," Jayden practically growled. [more]
