Jayda turned to Kylan. “Now we go,” she said and pulled her mask up over her nose.
“I need to stay,” said Kylan. His voice strained.
He sat on his knees covered in soot and sand, and soaking wet, with the lifeless elf still in his arms. He looked like an abandoned and helpless child, much like when they had first met.
“Listen closely Kylan,” she placed a hand softly behind his neck under his wet hair and pulled him in. “If you stay here you will die. No one will sing songs about you, no one will know your name. You will die alone, among strangers who share nothing with you but the shape of your ears.”
Kylan wouldn’t meet her eyes. He looked past her for a moment, she assumed judging whether the fight was truly lost or not, until he gently moved the elven man’s body from his lap, picked up his sword and stood. Jayda eyed him carefully as she stood as well. She checked his movements, trying to decipher if he would fight or leave before he could even say. He gripped the silver hilt of his sword behind his head and then in an instant of black metal and another sharp crack of thunder he lunged it at her. She dropped to the side on her back with bow and arrow ready but she wouldn’t need them just yet.
Kylan stood in the rain with his blade through the torso of a guard. The chaos around him seemed to blur as Jayda stared in awe at Kylan’s sudden transformation – a helpless child from her past to a man with a blood-stained face. The blood, mixed with rain, trickled down his strong jaw and the weight of the guard whom he held up by the hilt of his blade caused the muscles in his arms to raise. The guard dropped his sword, intended for her back she guessed, and Kylan let him fall to his knees. He drew back his blade, which slowly turned a bright ruby as the air and rain aged the blood past a fresh black. The guard fell to his side with a dazed groan. Jayda’s eyes met Kylan’s, dark and wild, and emphasized by his pale wet skin. [more]
