Djerba Déjà Vu is Alexis Debary's first literary work of fiction and it's based on the 4/11 terrorist blast on the island of Djerba, in Tunisian, in 2002. The author studied Islamic Studies and German Literature at the University of Hamburg and has travelled and lived extensively in Arabic speaking countries. She binds first-hand glimpses of life in northern Africa and the Middle East with raw action and vibrant imagery. This full-length debut plays with cultural prejudice and the search for identity in the globalised world.

“Hm”, he said, drawing out the sound until it had the pitch of an insect. Then he sat down again and went back to sipping his Earl Grey. At lengths, looking her over keenly with his dark caerulean blue eyes, he casually inquired, “So, tell me, my dear, why do you want to work for us exactly. What is your motivation?” Promptly Monica forgot all the notes she’d mentally made. With a thoughtful air, the elderly gentleman across from her nodded in her direction, as though he were ticking off a mental list. He spoke English to her and his distinctly British accent came as a double surprise. It peeled off the wall of the elegant hotel suite to smooth her in an uncanny way. It implied a certain degree of pedigree she would never have expected from a German government agency, and it lured her to a frankness she’d sworn to avoid at all costs. At the same time, her initial excitement began to seep out of her fingers and into her teacup, making it tremble between her fingertips as she turned to soak up Mr. Schmitz’s words. What she didn’t know was that he was not the man he pretended.
Monica’s limbs are melting. Her face glistens. She noses closer, playing her lips over the rough stubbles on his chin. Her lips edge nearer while his hot scent envelops her, robbing her of her senses. Beneath her shirt, her nipples tense to buds while the shed’s electronically driven appliances hum softly in the background. With a forceful movement, he locks her in his arms, covering her mouth with kisses, and she feels how his desire churns to life, while, outside, the shadow of a movement flashes by...
